Homemade Recycled Paper

If you find yourself with a bunch of paper and lots of free time, try making homemade recycled paper using this guide and this guide. Homemade paper makes great journal paper, collage paper and note card paper. I have found that you can use printed paper, hand processors can be used instead of blenders, and soaking paper for several days makes paper easier to handle. Good luck and have fun!

Be Healthy and Eco Friendly

Walk or bike instead of driving and the environment and your health will flourish. Too far to walk? Park your car a few blocks before your destination and walk the rest. (This will work only if you can turn directly around and head home.)

Constuct a Compost Bin

Composting is an easy way to help grow your garden the natural way and keep from filling up land fills. I have had success following the following instuctions for making a compost bin out of a regular storage container. (Note: I used a bigger container for our family of four and it worked out well.) Here is the link. You Grow Girl: Compost Bin

Buy Locally and Organic Food

Obviously the most "green" food is organic, local, vegan food. And although this can sometimes be aquired. But given the choice, which is more "green"? Locally grown is in the end the most green, but organic is quite good also and better for your health. Point being, if you absolutely need a certain ingredient or want to improve your health, buy organic; but if you want to make up for that long car trip, but local.

The Multitasking Oven

One great energy suck is your conventenal oven. But don't despair, you can still bake and be helpful to the enviroment. Try these tips.

  • When making recipes made in 8 by 8 baking pans or loaf pans, cook them in a conventional oven.
  • Make your oven multitask.
  • Only one large dish to bake for tonight. Whip up something for tommorow night and bake it along side.
  • Avoid opening and closing the oven door frequent times.
  • Always turn off your oven immediately after using it.
  • Make sure your dish is ready when the oven is.
